Piranha 3DVAUGHN FRY on
PIRANHA 3D

Piranha 3D is a movie that asks of the viewer to check intelligence at the door. Much like the mandated shower before entering the public pool, Piranha 3D viewers will likely to skip the sanitation precaution and dive in asking questions. “Why is the boat sinking while stuck on rocks? Is there a good reason to have a tour guide of a lake? How could these piranha have possibly made it this far when they only had each other to eat?”
It’s spring break at Lake Victoria (obvious Lake Havasu). A rift has exposed a subterranean lake and the prehistoric piranha that rule it are finding their way to the surface. That’s really all you need to know. I could mention that local sheriff Julie Forester (Elisabeth Shue) has to save the vacationing masses. I could mention that Wild Wild Girls (Girls Gone Wild?) video pioneer Derrick (Jerry O’Connell) has commissioned her son as a tour guide and placed him in danger. Yeah, but like that really matters. Some movies make an effort to get...

The expendables VAUGHN FRY on
THE EXPENDABLES

The Expendables is the first/last action movie where the selling point is the aura of the ensemble cast, and this one has testosterone so thick you can cut it with a machete. Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone, multitasking as director and co-writer) is leader of the eponymous mercenary team. His number one guy is Lee Christmas (played by Jason Statham) and rounding out the team are Dolph Lundgren , Jet Li, Randy Couture, and Terry Crews—must of whom have loosely defined names. For $5 million in cash they are going to overthrow a rogue CIA operative named James Monroe (Eric Roberts), who has seized a small island where he profits from drug trafficking.
Rounding up this cast was a gallant move on Stallone’s part, but he’s never been a great director. The Expendables features some ...

SCOTT PILGRIM vs THE WORLD

Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is the bass player for the aspiring rock band Sex Bob-omb. He’s not a lady killer but one day Scott meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Instead of a typical dating ritual, Scott is plagued with challenges by Ramona’s seven evil exes. Despite his lackluster physique, Scott can go toe to with most of them in hand to hand combat. When that fails he turns to the powers of his noggin or guitar.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is the most video game-esque movie I’ve ever seen. There are stats, one-ups, power-ups. Coins even appear when a foe is dispatched, suggesting that the audience/player continue the movie/game. These are all referential gags that build a fantasy atmosphere and make it difficult to question the feasibility of plot. Just about anything can happen, and when it did I was able to accept it.
There seems to be no bounds to the inspiration that can be drawn from underground geek subculture. Most of the film has effects that bring to life the popular formats of manga, anime, and video game staples, but out of nowhere sounds and laugh tracks are lifted from...

INCEPTION

Writer and director Christopher Nolan pulls together an all-star cast for Inception, a mind-altering thriller. The film stars Leonard DiCaprio as Cobb, the leader of a team of thieves who understand the inner workings of dreams. Given the puzzling nature of the film, it’s best just to say that the plot involves Cobb and his men implanting an idea into the mind of a businessman’s rival in exchange for freedom to see his children.
The rules of dreams in Inception are staggeringly complicated. There is talk about kicks and drops that early on fall of deaf ears but in practice become very cool. The visuals are outstanding. Seeing a Paris street fold over itself is about as realistic as one could expect. The signature scene may be a zero gravity fight in a hotel that would make astronauts jealous.
It’s almost painful how little the ...

PREDATORS

Predators is not the typical reboot that asks fans to forget about previous entries, it goes the extra yard by actively working to destroy its predecessors’ legacy. So, how does it manage to do this?
Directed by Nimród Antal, Predators throws a group of elite soldiers into a mysterious jungle. Leading the pack are Adrien Brody and Alice Braga as experienced soldiers. The rest of the gang (introducing yourself by name isn’t popular with this crowd) comprises of mob enforcers, psychopaths, and worse. Each parachute into an unfamiliar jungle, learn to trust each other, and find that they are farther from home than originally thought. Not only are they on a distant planet, but they are part of a hunting preserve stocked by honor bound extraterrestrials.
Predators is strewn with references to the original ’87 film Predator, so it is fitting to further the comparison. The original film served up two motifs: raw masculinity, and nature trumping technology. The casting of Predators is too gender neutral too evoke the original’s message. The average member of Dutch’s team would wipe the floor with the best offered here. Adrien Brody and Alice Braga are...

CARRIERS

What separates Carriers from other films in the zombie subgenre is the lack of zombies. While other movies focus on a group of survivors fending off hordes of undead/infected as well as the occasional corrupt sect of humans, the protagonists of Carriers deal with personal hygiene. Any direct contact with the infected assures a slow death and some indirect contact is jut as vexing. They have established rules that they follow meticulously, keeping Clorox on hand to wipe down phones and cars. Their surgical masks are fondly personalized with Sharpie drawn animal mouths and protruding tongues.
Our protagonist quartet is comprised of fearless leader Brian (Chris Pine), his brother Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci), Brian’s girlfriend Bobby (Piper Perabo) and their pal Kate (Emily VanCamp). They are on a road trip across the desert of the western United States, fleeing a ...

PRINCE OF PERSIA

I’d been hearing about this film for what feels like years, hoping it would be the one of overturn the curse of the video game based movie. With Disney throwing $150 million USD into Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time would seem a contender. For my money Lara Croft: Tomb Raider retains the title with Mortal Kombat being first runner-up. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is based on the popular Prince of Persia video games series with a history that goes back over 2 decades, but more notably it ties in with recent entries. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Dastan the adopted prince of Persia. After evidence is present of dealing arms with enemies, the Persian army attacks the sacred city responsible. Prince Dastan leads the siege and becomes a hero, but not in the eyes of the conquered Princess Tamina, played by Gemma Arterton. It turns out that the actual cause of the siege was to gain possession of a ...

ROBIN HOOD

Robin Hood comes from director Ridley Scott and stars his frequent lead Russell Crowe. Though their record together is extensive, the movie that is likely to draw a comparison is 2000’s Gladiator. Both films feature battle sequences set during historic times, but other than that they are apples and oranges.
Robin Longstride (Crowe) is an archer serving the army of King Richard during the crusades. The weight of plundering the countryside has taken its toll. Robin sees an opportunity to escape servitude and in the process gains his famous title. Fulfilling a dying nobleman’s request, Robin and his soon to be merry men set out for Nottingham where he meets the blind Sir Walter Loxley (Max von Sydow) and the diligent Marion (Cate Blanchett). Justin Hammer played (Sam Rockwell) is the Bill Gates to Tony’s Steve Jobs, evidenced by the stress on their competing arms expos. When Stark’s showboating at a racetrack leads to a curiously well-timed showdown with a mysterious Russian named Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), Hammer sees an opportunity to fund a project to surpass Tony’s and win a lucrative military contract. Ivan has other ideas in mind, wanting to make Tony pay for the betrayal his father was dealt. Can Tony stop them? Will Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) finally accuse him of sexual harassment? Truth be told there are some funny lines and a couple of quality moments of comic book style action. There’s also a ton of ...

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

With remakes being inevitable, I’d prefer that they be based on flawed originals. The new Clash of the Titans, in concept tried to do this. This is my stance on remakes. The trouble is that Hollywood green lights remakes of popular, good, movies because of their justifiable built-in fan bases. The 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street was a refreshing, novel, approach to the slasher subgenre film. I can understand why Platinum Dunes would have was well-known music video director Samuel Bayer helm its remake.
A Nightmare on Elm Street focuses on a group of teens that share haunting nightmares. When they go to sleep, they have demented dreams of a maniacal burn victim named Freddy Krueger (Jackie Earle Haley). Freddy chases the kids through his world and if he can get his ...

KICK-ASS

Kick-Ass is based on a recent comic from Marvel by the same name, which was first published only 2 years ago under their Icon brand. Thankfully, the screenplay is sharp enough to demand zero prior knowledge. Though I haven’t read an issue, I’m confident that fans (however invested 2 years of fandom can be) of the comic will be satisfied if not elated.
Our movie centers around a high school boy named Dave (Aaron Johnson). He’s been picked on too many times and is sick of seeing people stand by and watch. So he orders up a costume and plots to fight muggers as his alter ego Kick-Ass but is soon met with a heavy dose reality. Meanwhile a crime boss played by excellently by Mark Strong is having troubles with a real life, hyper violent Batman clone by the name of Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his little princesses Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz). A case of mistaken identity leads the crime syndicate to believe that the guy they want is ...

WRISTCUTTERS, a love story

Most people don’t spend much of the day thinking about how they will be remembered; they see their actions and relationships as the defining factors of their lives. A few people will give property value. What makes director Goran Dukic’s Wristcutters: A Love Story interesting and unique is the weight attached to the method one “offs” themselves.
Zia (Patrick Fugit) is a depressed individual who slit his wrists and is now wondering a world of like-minded individuals. The land he wanders is symbolic of the downtrodden. Everything is hit with a cool hue. Smiling is impossible. Material objects are garbage. It’s a poor man’s Neitherworld from Beetle Juice. HOT TUB TIME MACHINE

I wasn’t originally on board with the hot tub as a time machine, because… it sounds idiotic. That never changes; there is no good explanation for its existence. Later in the film and thanks to a cold war subplot where the ski patrol has taken Red Dawn to the extreme and outed our quartet like McCarthy, we learn of a thin explanation for the occurrence of the time travel. It’s a comedy so much can be forgiven if there is a laugh to be earned. Hot Tub Time Machine has those in spades. Not a minute went by ...

DAYBREAKERS

I’ve often wondered why so many films feature vampires as a select few. Okay, so sunlight does more than burn them (sparkling doesn’t count). Otherwise they almost always possess transformative characteristics, immortality, and sometimes they can even fly. It makes sense for them to dominate the food chain and flourish over our comparatively frail bodies. That’s the world crafted by brothers Michael and Peter Spierig. Daybreakers juggles action and drama, even throwing in contemporary politics; it has everything under the sun. Ethan Hawke is a hermatologist by the name of Edward Dalton. Alice Kingsley (Mia Wasikowska) is, unbeknownst to her, on her way to her engagement party. Turns out this is the famous Alice who 13 years earlier ventured in to Wonderland. Surely there is a creative reason to pull her back into the zany world. Nope, she merely felt the urge to chase a rabbit who himself was seeking to fulfill a prophecy. And so, Alice in roped back into the world of fantasy/absurdity.
If you’ve seen anything at all on this movie, then the strengths are obvious. It’s Disney, it’s CGI loaded, it’s in 3D. Everything visual is well appointed with lavish detail. It makes me wonder if director Tim Burton is better suited as a ...

A 1950s ward for the criminally insane isn’t a pleasantry for anyone. The terror behind the walls has a mystique to the public. Remakes are not your friend. Regardless, they are an inevitable fact of entertainment these days. I won’t go as far as to say that it’s possible to do them right, but there are circumstances that make them easier to accept. For the 2010 version of The Wolfman you know the idea is to update a 69-year-old film with new effects. If that were all it takes to create a great remake, the Oscar ballots would need rewriting.

You never know what you are going to get. With From Paris with Love, you see two distinctly different marketing strategies. One set of trailers and TV spot bills it as a hard-boiled action flick, with Travolta unleashing a fury of bullets. The other focuses on the much lesser known Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as he deals with the comedic situations placed on him through the Travolta character. If you can go in with an open mind, you’ll see that both approaches ring true for better or worse.

If a movie focusing on angels that are hell-bent on clearing the slate that has become humanity while a loose-canon seeks to protect the next Jesus doesn’t sound like a great idea to you, you aren’t the only one. Despite featuring angels that possess innocent people, I’m more interested in understanding what possessed Sony Pictures to release Legion. Not only is the plot bordering on religiously insensitive, but also it goes unexplained for nearly half the film. Characters simply appear, speak a sentence of meaningless character traits, and then chaos erupts. Beyond that you can look forward to ...
